Design and Technology at Burnley High School offers an creative, inspiring, challenging and practical curriculum that really supports and encourages our students to think creatively and problem solve, both as individuals and as part of a team. Throughout their time at Burnley High School, our students will be able to explore the world of Design and Technology through a variety of projects which follow the National Curriculum. This provides our students with knowledge that they can use to solve a range of real and relevant design problems within a rang of contexts, encouraging them to consider their own and others’ needs. Our students will complete 5 different projects each year in the following areas:
- Textiles
- Food technology
- Product design
With each project, our students will also learn about a theory topic linked to your project. An example of this is the application of smart materials such as phosphorescent and thermochromic and their part in developing innovative designs in Year 7, how food miles impacts the environment in Year 8 and anthropometrics in Year 9.
The Design Technology department is passionate about allowing students to create design solutions with creativity and originality. The curriculum has been designed to allow them to gain new knowledge and build on their current knowledge to produce high quality products. The knowledge you learn in year 7 will become the foundations of your learning throughout year 8 and year 9 and into GCSE.
Hospitality and catering allows for practical experiences, cooking and life skills to develop independence, manage a budget and meet deadlines. The food curriculum has been specifically designed considering our school community. Skills learnt at KS3 may then be developed further with the study of hospitality and catering where high-level practical skills are the key to success along with knowing how to run a catering business successfully.
